CRACKERS (1984) - Louis Malle

This '80s remake of Big Deal on Madonna Street begins with a Michael McDonald song and ends with a cautionary disclaimer about the dangers of ingesting helium. I think that tells you about all you need to know of Crackers. It's enough to know that Malle is well out of his comfort zone with this light-hearted caper film, what I'm guessing was little more than a paid directing gig. Sean Penn boasts a laughable Southern accent. Wallace Shawn is mostly mute. Donald Sutherland plays the George Clooney role. And Christine Baranski gets to be sexy. Huh? What? Don't ask. It's Crackers, ya'll.
