COLD WEATHER (2010) - Aaron Katz

A post-grad slacker with a dormant degree in forensic science shacks up with his sister in Portland, works at an ice factory while reading old Sherlock Holmes novels, then gets involved with the bare seedlings of a mystery involving his ex-girlfriend. As with most mumblecore efforts, the mystery/plot is not the point. It's the beautiful rain-soaked Portland scenery, the random awkward bonding moments between co-workers, ex-lovers, brothers and sisters. And in case you missed the point of there being no "point," the abrupt ending (arguably a cop-out) kinda underlines it for you.

What's in the briefcase? A first-edition Hound of the Baskervilles? The Great Whatsit? A pastrami sandwich? The end of the world? Forget it,'s Portland. It's mumble-noir. Who cares...
