THE DRIVER (1978) - Walter Hill
The Le Samourai of getaway driver pics, if that means anything to you.
Bruce Dern is a fantastic prick of a cop. Ryan O'Neal is an effective blank slate, maybe the best use of this innate quality outside of Barry Lyndon. And Isabelle Adjani employs the world's most suggestive heart-shaped lips.
The car chases? Not quite Bullitt-caliber, not quite French Connection, but maybe that's just because the L.A. landscape ain't San Fran or NYC. This is simple, effective, streamlined film noir on wheels. The western parallels? Well, only if you consider Dern calls O'Neal "Cowboy" every chance he gets.
