PUBLIC ENEMIES (2009) - Michael Mann
Let's just say I'm not so much disappointed as a little underwhelmed.
Mann dares to go minimal and grandiose at the same time -- spare in the way of character development (a barely-there Christian Bale, Depp playing Dillinger as a cool-as-a-cucumber cipher) and grandiose in terms of PE's Depression-era period canvas, birth of the FBI sub-plot, and two and half hour run time. It's got some of the virtues of Heat and some of the vices of Ali. It's a mixed bag that works only half the time, and I could go on for hours as to what irked and what thrilled me as a disciple of Mann. But I've already given the master two and a half hours of my time.
